Video Assessment - Proficient research into similar products
Video Assessment
I have assessed three music videos, by GCSE students, I have given them all a level that I think they would get. I have given the first music video a level 3, this is because they have used good shot transistions and used a good variety of shots. I also think that they have used good costume and mise en scene to fit in with their chosen genre. To improve their music video, I think that they need to improve their lighting on certain scenes and maybe add a few more different locations.
For the second music video, I have given them a level 3, this is because they have used good editing and filmed in several good locations. I think that they could improve their grade by changing the lighting in certain shots and smoother cuts.
For the third music video, I have give them a level 2/3, this is because they havent used very steady shots (some shots are shaky) They are also a few mistakes, for example there are people that are not meant to be in the shot and they are not in sync. I think that they could improve this by being more carefull when they film and editing better.

Inspiration
We watched many music videos to get some ideas and inspiration for our video.
These three were the main videos that influenced our final outcome.

Changes
Changes
We made several changes and improvements along the way.
Originally: We were going to have Mike, rapping in the song and show some performing and narrative shots of him. We were also going to include him in magazine advertisement & album cover.
New Idea: We cut our video down and we dont feature Mike in the song or the video. He is no longer featured on the album cover or magazine advertisement.
Reasons For Change: The song was too long and this made it difficult to film and edit. We also found it hard to get Mike in for filming seeing as he is outisde of school.
Originally: We were going to have a 'dad' figure being filmed to show the abuse and add flashbacks to emphasise this.
New Idea: We have just used narrative and performing shots of our girl.
Reasons For Change: We found it difficult to find a male figure to appear in our video.
Originally: We were going to use a mid shot of 'Storm' looking away from the camera.
New Idea: We then decided to use a close up, of 'Storm' looking into the camera.
Reasons For Change: So she had eye contact with audience.

Editing the music video
Editing the music video has been a very long process. There was a few technical problems with editing the music video and saving it. Half way through editing we noticed that we didn't have enough footage to carry on editing. Also we never really had any narrative. We decided that we were going to shoot the narrative in the dance studio, we thought this would look good as it would show her being able to express her feelings through dancing. This would be her only place she would be able to escape from her problems. We really thought this would be good because it would still show sorrow in the music video, but then relief that she would be able to escape.
The music video starts on her on the floor. We did this so it shows her on the floor at the beginning. This makes the audience already think that something serious has happened to her. Then the music video starts... it almost feels like the music video is going back in time, then again at the end of the music video she ends up on the floor. We used a special effect to reverse the clip so she slowly gets up from the floor. The shot then fades to black. We really think that this was a good way to end the music video. Doing it this way adds more depth to the music video and adds even more narrative to it.
I edited the music video so it was in black and white. In some ways this challenges the codes and conventions of an original r&b music video.. The narrative it in black and white but i have made the contrast and the brightness a lot more stronger, this way it makes the narrative a little different. It also makes the music video more interesting i feel.
R&B music videos aren't usually editing in black and white. We have found a small few that have edited there music videos in black and white. I will post them onto the blog after this post so i can show what is similar.
