Audience Theories

Audience Theories
Audience Theories. 'All the worlds a stage, and all the men and all the women are merely players' Some people see media audiences as being easily manipulated. Masses of people can be persuaded to buy products through advertising or to follow corrupt leaders through propaganda.'

The Hypodermic Syringe Theory: 'Media injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience, who as a powerful mass have no choice but to be influenced.' Our music video has a sensitive subject (domestic violence,) because of this we were thinking of putting an age rating on the video because we thought that people might be directly influenced by it, but after carefully going through the lyrics and discussing it in our group we decided that an age rating would not be needed.

Uses & Gratification: We have thought about the uses and grafitications for our media product and have decided that people will be watching our video for entertainment, escapism and social (to feel sympathy for our character.

Andrew Goodmans Theory: We have decided that our music video is going to contain some visual interpretations for example we are going to include some 'subtle' scenes of domestic violence to match the lyrics, this matches with the Andrew Goodmans theory.

Semiotics And Understanding Images

Semiotics And Understanding Images
Encoding And Decoding:

As producers we are expected to encode the text with ideologies and codes and conventions that are appropriate to our genre. As consumers, we have learnt to read (decode) these. In our text we are going to encode it with ideas of domestic abuse and violence. We are going to encode these ideas through camera angles, costume, narrative and body language. This supports McMahon And Quinns study in 1998. They think that texts are encoded by three different forms, these are; technical, symbolic and written.

We will think about using high camera angles when filming the victim and low camera angles when filming the abuser, this will make show the victims vulnerability and the abusers power over the victim. We will show a fist coming towards the victims face and then cut to a shot of her cowering and crying or maybe a blank black screen in between, this avoids any actual violence being seen. The music video will include both narrative and performing shots, like most most music videos do.

Audience Feedback on music video!

Some of the audience feedback that we have gained has been very good.
Some of the points that people have made are that the music video is best in black and white.
Also a couple of people have said that the music video is good but maybe the performing should stay in colour.. and the narrative stay in black and white this would then show that the footage would look like she was looking back in time on how she is living her life.
I personally think that the whole video should stay in black and white, i have made the narrative shots in black and white too but i have made the contrast and the brightness high so it would look slightly different.

Some of the feedback that we gained was the question of why is she in a studio?
the answer is because we tried to make it look like this is a place where she could escape and also let go of any anger that she had. The dance studio was the only place that she could be her self and let out any emotion through dance. We have tried to show this through her dancing and also there is shots of her looking into the mirrors and singing into them. Almost like she is trying to shout at someone but no one is there, so she is shouting to herself at the mirror.

Other feedback was that in parts of the music video some of it isn't in sync. This i do agree with and i will be going back into adobe premiere to solve this problem as we want the whole music video to be at a high standard.

ONE MORE THING

we are going to do a survey, this survey will be filled out by people after they have watched the music video. This is another way that we can gain audience feedback so we can make our product even better!

i will scan the survey in, and upload it to the blog for you to have a look at...
the overall outcome will also be posted once i have all the forms back!

Video Assessment - Proficient research into similar products

Video Assessment
I have assessed three music videos, by GCSE students, I have given them all a level that I think they would get. I have given the first music video a level 3, this is because they have used good shot transistions and used a good variety of shots. I also think that they have used good costume and mise en scene to fit in with their chosen genre. To improve their music video, I think that they need to improve their lighting on certain scenes and maybe add a few more different locations.
For the second music video, I have given them a level 3, this is because they have used good editing and filmed in several good locations. I think that they could improve their grade by changing the lighting in certain shots and smoother cuts.
For the third music video, I have give them a level 2/3, this is because they havent used very steady shots (some shots are shaky) They are also a few mistakes, for example there are people that are not meant to be in the shot and they are not in sync. I think that they could improve this by being more carefull when they film and editing better.

Inspiration

Inspiration
We watched many music videos to get some ideas and inspiration for our video.
These three were the main videos that influenced our final outcome.

Changes

Changes
We made several changes and improvements along the way.

Originally: We were going to have Mike, rapping in the song and show some performing and narrative shots of him. We were also going to include him in magazine advertisement & album cover.
New Idea: We cut our video down and we dont feature Mike in the song or the video. He is no longer featured on the album cover or magazine advertisement.
Reasons For Change: The song was too long and this made it difficult to film and edit. We also found it hard to get Mike in for filming seeing as he is outisde of school.

Originally: We were going to have a 'dad' figure being filmed to show the abuse and add flashbacks to emphasise this.
New Idea: We have just used narrative and performing shots of our girl.
Reasons For Change: We found it difficult to find a male figure to appear in our video.

Originally: We were going to use a mid shot of 'Storm' looking away from the camera.
New Idea: We then decided to use a close up, of 'Storm' looking into the camera.
Reasons For Change: So she had eye contact with audience.
